"Tanya Dr. Kita"

During this period of the pandemic, where most people are mindful to only go out for essential matters, how can one access good quality medical advice from one’s home, without going out to the clinics or hospitals? Unless you have a very good relationship with your family GP, it is unlikely this is something easily available to many. Hence, “Tanya Dr Kita” hopes to meet this need, especially for low-income families, who are mostly hourly wage earners. "Dr Kita” (Malay for "Our Doctor")  hopes to be that “listening ear” for the B40 community and to hold their hands virtually during this very difficult period, by building a friendly and professional rapport online. Dr Kita will make a reasonable initial assessment as to their physical, medical and mental well being and needs, and from then on maintain some baseline medical records, should they wish to follow up on their medical condition. And recommend such appropriate actions to be taken. Dr Kita seeks to be the B40 communities first point of contact.

Who is "Dr. Kita?"

Dr Veronica Chelliah graduated from The Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland. She spent over  4 years in the public health sector. At University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur she covered orthopaedic, medical, surgery paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology as well as the accident & emergency department. At the Ministry of Health, as District Officer, she oversaw all the schools in the Petaling district being 235 primary and secondary schools. In addition, she oversaw the smooth running of 3 Government polyclinics in Puchong, Seri Kembangan and Kelana Jaya, Selangor.

Thereafter Dr Veronica joined a well renown private hospital, Pantai Medical Centre, Bangsar where for almost 8 years she focused in the areas of dealing with anything and everything presented at the Emergency department from a simple fever to more complex issues like a resuscitation or stabilizing other acute conditions such as cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies that may present at the A&E or even at the wards after hours. Following that, in 2006 she opened her own private practice in Petaling Jaya called Klinik Chelliah where she served a wide spectrum of the community from the T20, M40 to the B40. As a result, she is well regarded in the community and despite being wheelchair-bound as a result of an accident, she continues to serve her community, who continue to seek her advice through the ever-versatile smartphone.

Dr Veronica is no stranger when it comes to working with the less privilege. At the Guru Darma Society, she carried out free medical screenings and health clinics for the less privilege in the Klang Valley whilst also organising various charitable and public health camps which involved screening and immunisation clinics for children in the Jinjang area, Selangor.
